Choosing a biochar carbon standard and methodology
The right route depends on the facility, feedstock, geography, end use, available evidence and commercial objective. A familiar standard is not automatically the best fit.

Route selection
Start with the project, then test the available standards
Methodology selection affects eligibility, additionality, measurements, audit preparation, the resulting unit and the buyers that may consider it.
A route that works for one biochar facility may not fit another. Facility status, biomass sourcing, technology, end-use contracts and existing records should be assessed before a programme is chosen.
Decision factors
Questions to answer before comparing names
Project boundary
Is this a new or existing production facility? Which legal entities, sites and activities sit inside the proposed project?
Feedstock and sourcing
Which biomass is used, what happened to it previously and what sustainability or waste-status evidence exists?
Technology and scale
Is production industrial, mobile or artisan? What operating and emissions-control data can the equipment provide?
End use and geography
Where will biochar be produced and used, in which applications, and how will the final destination be evidenced?
Accounting and durability
How does the route calculate stable carbon, project emissions, uncertainty and the duration of storage?
Commercial route
What validation, verification, registry, timing and buyer requirements must the project satisfy?
