How are biochar carbon credits created?
Producing biochar is only the physical starting point. A carbon credit requires an eligible project, measured data, lifecycle accounting, independent review and registry issuance.

The distinction
Biochar is a material. A carbon credit is a verified record
A tonne of biochar is not the same as a tonne of carbon dioxide removal.
A credit represents a quantified climate outcome under a defined standard and methodology. The calculation considers the stable carbon stored and the emissions associated with feedstock sourcing, production, transport and end use. Eligibility, additionality, monitoring and independent verification also matter.
The project boundary
Evidence follows the carbon through the value chain
Document the feedstock source, previous use, ownership, volume and transport.
Record how the biochar is made, including operating data, energy use, yields and process emissions.
Sample and test the biochar characteristics needed by the selected methodology.
Maintain traceability through storage, transport and the final eligible application.
The route to issuance
From project design to an issued unit
Define the project
Select an applicable methodology, set the project boundary and document the baseline and additionality case.
Build the monitoring system
Specify measurements, sampling, data controls, responsibilities and records before relying on them for a claim.
Validate and register
An approved independent body reviews the project design against the relevant programme rules.
Monitor and verify
Operational data is assembled for a monitoring period and independently checked.
Issue and retire
Accepted outcomes may be issued on a registry. A credit used for a claim is retired so it cannot be used again.
Standards in practice
The methodology determines the evidence
Different programmes set their own eligibility, quantification, monitoring and assurance rules. For example, Verra's active VM0044 v1.2 applies globally to the conversion of waste biomass into biochar at new production facilities and covers eligible soil and non-soil applications.
Programme rules and methodologies change. Project decisions should use the current official documents rather than a summary article.
