In Aid of Goats and Indigenous Fruit Trees: Going Beyond Safe Water in Western Zambia.

In the Western Province of Zambia, CO2balance, in collaboration with Village Water, have successfully rehabilitated 520 handpumps, supporting over 90,000 individuals with access to clean water.

In these rural areas, residents typically rely on locally sourced firewood for cooking. To encourage more sustainable wood usage, ECHO conduct Environmental Health and Sanitation Sessions that offer training on tree planting, responsible wood harvesting, and methods to prevent the burning of certain food plants to support their regrowth. This training also serves as a platform for community members to share their environmental concerns with ECHO.

One such beneficiary of an Environmental Health and Sanitation Session, Mrs Kabuta Lusinga from the Senanga District commented:

In the past we lacked information on how to care for the environment, especially trees that play a cardinal role in the ecosystem. Through the training on environmental health offered by ECHO we are learning a lot on how to care for our environment including trees… and when we stop activities such as bush fire, we allow trees in the forest to multiply, and the forest is also preserved.
