Project Overview

Less than half of Mozambique’s population has access to safe drinking water, with rural access as low as 35%. Many rely on unclean water from rivers and shallow wells, affecting health and well-being. Over 98% of rural households use wood for cooking, and boiling water over open fires worsens indoor air pollution and carbon emissions.

Many rural handpumps are broken due to lack of maintenance funding, and some communities lack safe water infrastructure entirely. This project rehabilitates, installs, and maintains boreholes, builds local capacity for sustainable water management, and conducts WASH campaigns, annual monitoring, and water quality testing.

Project Impacts

By restoring and installing water infrastructure and ensuring long-term maintenance, the project reduces waterborne illnesses and the need for firewood-dependent water purification, cutting CO2 emissions. WASH training improves hygiene and sanitation.

As water and firewood collection mainly fall on women and children, accessible boreholes save them time, allowing for other productive activities.
